Library Assistant Job Description – Temporary 1 Year

Salary: 18.00/ hour


Description: Library Assistant performs various circulation, reader advisory, and reference duties in
support of community library operations for Upper Skagit Library. The ideal candidate is a high school
student, college student, or recent graduate who is looking for job experience. This position reports to
the Library Director.


Position Schedule: 10 to 20 hours a week (includes nights and weekends)


Examples of Essential Duties:
● Organizes and shelves library materials. Assists with maintenance of library collections;
● Performs circulation duties including checking books in/out, processing hold requests, handling
money, and helping to troubleshoot patron account issues;
● Provides customer service to library patrons in-person or by telephone including responding to
general and reference inquiries and locating library materials
● Educates and advises patrons in the use of library computers and equipment, provides
troubleshooting assistance in relation to computer/library equipment as required;
● Performs clerical duties as needed;
● Helping with any other tasks as assigned.

Typical Qualifications:

● Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with staff, volunteers, and
patrons;
● Ability to work with people from a diverse set of backgrounds and ages in a public
setting;
● Willingness to learn new skills and adapt to new and unexpected situations;
● Ability to communicate effectively;
● Subject to sitting, standing, walking, bending, reaching and lifting objects up to 40
pounds, but can be modified to suit any ability;
● Must be 16 years or older

Acceptable Experience and Training:
● Knowledge of computers, cell phones, and/or other technologies.
