The Freedge Program has been a tremendous benefit to everyone who visits our library, serving people of all ages, from months old to 102. This program provides meals to a wide variety of individuals, including latchkey kids, those experiencing homelessness, and anyone who may not have enough food to eat.
The program has provided all kinds of food such as:
- Sandwiches of all kinds
- Salads (fruit, vegetable, and mixed varieties)
- Yogurts, jellos, and desserts
- Fresh fruits and vegetables
- Breads, cheeses
- baby food and infant formula
Additionally, people often leave donations of coffee, creamer, sugar, hot chocolate, apple cider, and herbal teas. Occasionally, we’re fortunate enough to have bottled water and soda available, too. Best of all, everything is free for all library patrons.
The Need for Growth and Support
While the program has been successful, we’d greatly benefit from additional vendors and donations to ensure our shelves remain well-stocked. Items we particularly need include:
- Bottled water and water flavorings, as well as powdered electrolytes
- Plastic silverware for those experiencing homelessness
A Personal Perspective
As someone who volunteers at the library and uses this program myself, I can attest to its value. On days when I volunteer or visit the library and find myself low on food, the Freedge Program provides an essential safety net. It has not only helped me but also countless others in our community.
A Vision for the Future
This program has proven to be incredibly beneficial, and with your help, we can keep making a difference in people’s lives. I would love to see the program expand to an even bigger scale, which would ensure even more people have access to the resources they need. Your contributions—whether through donations, volunteering, or simply spreading the word—make a real difference.
