Photography Club is held via Zoom on the second to last Saturday of each month at 1pm. The month's theme will be announced on the 1st of the month.

Due to COVID-19 all in-library programming is temporarily suspended. Photo Club will now be held online in the interim.

Join us for Photography Club! Whether you shoot with a DSLR, film camera, or a smartphone, learn about what makes a good photograph, how to get the most out of your camera, and where all the best locations are. No previous experience required!

Virtual Photo Club

While we can’t physically be together, we can still share the love of photography! 

Virtual Photo Club works like this: 

On the first of the month the photo challenge theme will be posted.

You will have until the second to last Friday of the month to take new photos for the challenge and submit them.

During the month we’ll post links and videos with tips and inspiration to cheer you on here on our website as well as on our social media. 

On the second to last Saturday of the month, we’ll have a meeting via Zoom where we can video chat together and talk about our photos, what we liked about them, what we wish we could have done, and suggestions for improvement.

After that, photos will be collected and displayed on our website and social media! 

NOTE: Submitting your photos for photo club participation does not take away your copyright of your photos. You still own them, but by uploading your photos you give the Upper Skagit Library the right to share them publicly, online and off.

This Month's Theme: Still Life photography of books!

Help us celebrate National Library Lovers Month! 
 
This month’s challenge is to take still life photos of books! Using light, color, rule of thirds, and other photographic techniques, try to make your book photos stand out!

Rules:

  • Stick to the topic! Your photo won’t be included in the fun if we say focus on long exposure and you play with animal photography instead. 
  • You may edit your photos after taking them, BUT please don’t add elements that weren’t already in the photo. For example, if the bird wasn’t already in the photo, don’t Photoshop one in!
  • Photos must be taken in the month of January 2021.
  • Two photo entries per person.
  • If your photo has a human in it, please get that human’s consent to be in the photo and to have that photo be a part of photo club activities with a possibility of being shared on our website, social media, newsletter, etc. 
 

How to Submit Photos: 

  1. Email photos to [email protected] with “Photo Club Entry” in the headline. 
  2. Upload your photo to Facebook/Twitter/Instagram and use the hashtag #USLPhotoClub. Make sure that either your account or your post is public wherever applicable otherwise we can’t see it! 
 

NOTE: Submitting your photos for photo club participation does not take away your copyright of your photos. You still own them, but by uploading your photos you give the Upper Skagit Library the right to share them publicly, with attribution to you, online and off. 

Winter is a great time to take advantage of the extra hours of darkness for new photography techniques! Light painting is a type of photography where a moving light source is captured by the cameras sensor while the shutter is open for a longer than normal period of time (slow shutter speed). Using a slow shutter speed to create light trails or other effects is called Long Exposure Photography, and when combined with a moving light source created with intentional patterns it is called light painting. 
 
This month your challenge is try light painting or long exposure photography for yourself! While this process is easier to do with a DSLR or mirrorless camera usually, its very possible to do with today’s smartphones with either the in-camera settings or a third-party app. 

Need a cool source of light? Flashlights or any LED light source you can manipulate works. Also, using the form below you can take home some glow sticks from the library to use! Attach string to them in order to twirl them around or wrap them around a hula hoop before spinning it for the best effect!
